JOANN WRIGHT / ARTIST

Generally these days, I like to paint using acrylics on canvas, although in the past five years or so, I have also used fabric.  Two of my fabric pieces won awards - "Pocketbooks" in The Brave 100 exhibit at Eiland Arts Center in 2019, and "Women in Science" for the Haddon Fortnightly in 2023.  My style is strongly representational and I am inspired both by challenges from my favorite gallery - Eiland Arts Center, and by events in my life or incidents I come across in my reading.

My background is in education.  I taught for 35 years in public school and for several years in the graduate art education department at University of the Arts in Philadelphia, which is also where I earned my Masters.  My major at Rutgers was in lithography and I did printmaking for many years, woodcut and silkscreen.  I am painting now because it is easier on my hands.

Last year, I founded a small gallery in the Underwood building on the property of the historic Woodbury Friends Meeting and we have had two shows there since.  That was a first for me and very satisfying.  I would like to have a solo retrospective there in the next year.

The attached photo is from the Haddon Fortnightly "Through a Woman's Eyes" annual juried exhibition, the theme that year was Science, and this work is one of my "pocketbook" series with the portrait of a scientist on each fabric 'page.'

My blog is updated weekly if not more frequently so come over and let's talk about history.
